Beat the Winter Blues

By Alicia Thompson

With the shorter days and cooler temperatures of winter, it’s not uncommon to feel a little down.  Winter blues can lead to fatigue, increased appetite, weight gain and social withdrawal.  It’s no wonder you feel like hibernating!  Luckily, we have some tips to help you feel great this winter:

  • Wake up earlier in order to get as much exposure to natural sunlight as possible.  Little steps such as setting your alarm clock an hour earlier, getting up and opening the blinds or switching on your bedside lamp will help you stay energized.
  • Hit the gym or engage in any type of physical activity to help to burn off some of the extra calories you may have been consuming.  You will not only feel better afterward, but you will be more inclined to stay on track with healthy eating throughout the day and into the warmer months.
  • Have a spa day at home with Vitabath’s Pomegranate & Blood Orange Body Wash, from the Vitabath Fragrance Collection. Research shows citrus scents possess antidepressant-like effects by suppressing dopamine activity in the brain. Experience the mood-boosting properties of exotic hibiscus mingled with juicy tangerine and pomegranate arils. Formulated with antioxidant rich super fruit blend: Acai, Goji, Coffee, Noni, Pomegranate, Green Tea & Mangosteen.
  • Light a citrus candle for a well-needed pick me up. Since citrus scents enhance energy and boost mood, look for candles with lemon, lime, grapefruit, verbena, or orange scents.

What’s your strategy for beating the winter blues?

February is National Cherry Month!

By Alicia Thompson

This month is National Cherry Month, which celebrates one of our favorite vitamin-filled and antioxidant-rich fruits!   If you’re in the mood to celebrate, here are a few of our favorite ideas:

-        If you’re a chocoholic (like we are!), why not whip up a batch of chocolate-covered cherries?  All you’ll need are some freshly washed cherries, melted dark chocolate for dipping and a touch of white chocolate for that extra decorative drizzle.  Heavenly!

-        If you prefer classic desserts, try your hand at making a cherry pie – YUM!  We love this recipe.

-        Nothing gets us in the holiday mood like a great crafts project, and no flowers are more beautiful than cherry blossoms.  If you’re looking to start your spring crafts projects now, check out a beautiful Paper Cherry Blossom Display here that will look great in any dining or living room.

-        Most importantly, don’t forget to pamper yourself in the name of National Cherry Month!  Enjoy Vitabath’s Wild Red Cherry Body Wash.  This sulfate and paraben-free product from the Fragrance Collection is made with sweet cherry fruit extract and contains vitamins A, B3, B5, C, E for an antioxidant-rich super fruit blend and an absolutely delicious beauty experience.

How do you plan to celebrate?  Let us know your favorite things to do!

Skincare Secrets from 2012’s Grammy Award Nominees

By Alicia Thompson

The 54th Annual Grammy Awards will air on February 12 and recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry.  Since Awards Season is such a high-profile time for celebs and musicians, we set out to find how some of the most influential nominees in the industry keep their skin looking flawless on the red carpet.  Here a few award-winning beauty tips for glamorous, glowing and healthy skin from four of this year’s nominees:

Nicki Minaj says:

“I contour by using a lighter shade of foundation under my eyes instead of concealer.”

“I take my makeup off immediately [after touring to keep skin in good shape].”

Lady Gaga relies on the following:

“Spinach . . . hard work and sweat.”

Lady Gaga has also revealed in an interview with People Magazine that she washes her face with Ivory soap, a regimen her mother taught her.

Rihanna swears by:

“Water and rest for my skin – which helps the elasticity.”

Katy Perry (we love her!) tells her fans:

“I lotion every day.   I can’t leave the house without it!”

In addition to discussing her commitment to moisturizing with Glamour, Perry admitted to never tanning, opting for a more natural complexion to prevent premature aging.

Now that we’ve heard from the stars, what are some of your tried-and-true beauty secrets?  We’d love to hear from you!

Fashion Week: Exciting Shows and Events

By Alicia Thompson

Fashion Week has arrived!

For eight days and eight nights in February, the streets of New York City are flooded with models, fashion editors and celebrities alike.  After being at the heart of New York Fashion Week in September, we are all eager to see what our favorite designers come up with this time around!

Last season’s Spring 2012 runway collections told many stories, with bold prints, bright colors and sequins captivating show attendees and dominating the runways.

So, what are our predictions for the 2012 Fall/Winter collections?  My gut says designers will be rocking classic and sexy looks, incorporating plenty of burgundy, metallic and neutral colors.  In addition, the classic silhouette has returned!  Whether on a belted coat, a curvaceous dress or pencil skirt, the emphasis is on the waist.  The versatile wrap dress is a great way to accentuate your silhouette; the versatile style will cinch you in all the right places.

For heading outdoors, try a statement coat that incorporates different materials, a unique shape or an interesting detail on the surface – you don't want your coat too be basic.  New details to watch for also include wide arms, a belted waist, cocoon backs and a big cowl collar.

And lastly, don’t forget the patterned tights and hose.  They add texture to any outfit and can transform any day outfit into a night outfit!

Those are our predictions for Fashion Week!  Do you agree?  What are your go-to looks for cool months?

Super “Bowl-utiful” Athletes

By Alicia Thompson

With Super Bowl XLVI just days away, we’re honoring who we think are the most handsome athletes in the NFL.  This year’s game will be a rematch of the New England Patriots and New York Giants – following the Giants’ defeat of the Patriots four years ago, when the Patriots were deprived of what would have been the first 19-0 season in NFL history.

Here’s who made our list (from left to right above):

Eli Manning- New York Giants Quarterback

Tom Brady- New England Patriots Quarterback

Reggie Bush- Running Back for the Miami Dolphins

Tim Tebow- Denver Broncos Quarterback

Jay Cutler- Chicago Bears Quarterback

Do you agree?

Or maybe you’re not that into football and will watch the Super Bowl for the commercials.  If so, be sure to let us know your favorite one after the game!

Vitabath supports the Bleeding Heart Project

By Alicia Thompson

In honor of American Heart Month, Vitabath is teaming up with the Bleeding Heart Project to help raise awareness about heart disease.  Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States?  Another alarming fact is that the incidence of heart disease is rising in young people.  In fact, the Bleeding Heart Project was established after its founder, Raijean Stroud, was diagnosed with heart disease at the age of 28!

The Bleeding Heart Project is throwing its launch event in Chicago on February 3.  Vitabath has provided 100 packettes of body wash from the Fragrance Collection for the event gift bags.  In addition, we have put together and donated a gift basket ($75 value), pictured below, for a raffle that will benefit the Bleeding Heart Project!

The Bleeding Heart Project launch party will be an interactive night of heart health facts, giveaways, nutritious snacks, massages, red manicures and more!  For more information, please email raijean@bleedingheartproject.org.

We’re Pinterested to know…

By Alicia Thompson

Pinterest is the hot new social network on the block.  The site is a “virtual pinboard,” that allows you to organize and share images (or videos!) you find interesting or inspiring.  Once you uploaded or share an image on Pinterest, the image becomes a “Pin,” which you can place on customized, themed “Boards.”  You can create a Board for any topic and any purpose.  Lots of people are using Pinterest to help plan weddings, redecorate their homes and organize their favorite recipes.  I’ve even come across Boards for bucket lists and travel wish lists!

I have been using - and loving - Pinterest for some time now.  We recently asked Vitabath fans what they thought about Pinterest, and got an entirely positive response!  We’d love to hear more about your use of Pinterest, so please share in the comments, on our Facebook page or by tweeting to @Vitabath.

Vitabath supports the Salvation Army’s PLUS Program

By Alicia Thompson

We often focus on beauty in the external sense, so I want to take a break to discuss being beautiful on the inside!  You can enhance your inner beauty by giving back to society.  All people share a human connection and it is extremely important to help others who are less fortunate than we are.  After all, even though our circumstances may be different, all people are created equal.

There are so many different ways to give back.  Whether you donate money or time, giving back is beneficial, and not just for the recipients.  Research has shown that the old saying, “it’s better to give than to receive” is true after all!  Besides feeling good about yourself for doing something for others, giving back is also good for your physical health.

For over 20 years, Vitabath has supported the Salvation Army’s People Learning Useful Skills (PLUS) Program.  By providing packaging work for people with special needs, the PLUS program creates an environment that sets achievable goals, which serve to improve job readiness and increase self-confidence.  We are proud to support this worthy program, and look forward to the bright future of all who are impacted by the Salvation Army.  Follow Vitabath’s lead and get involved!
