New Year, New Products: When to toss your old cosmetics

“Out with the old and in with the new!” While this expression can apply to many things, as I sift through my makeup bag at the start of a new year I am reminded that it is time to toss some of my beloved cosmetics. Is your makeup bag in need of a makeover? Take a look at the guidelines below to determine what cosmetics to throw out and what to keep!
Mascara and Liquid Eyeliner
When to Toss: Every Three Months
As a general rule, eye products should be replaced frequently to prevent the delicate eye area from being exposed to bacteria. Mascara and liquid eyeliner tubes are dark and wet – the perfect breeding ground for germs. A pencil eyeliner can be kept for several years, since sharpening the pencil reveals a new, clean surface. Sanitize your eye pencil sharper with alcohol regularly, and NEVER share mascara or eyeliner of any kind.
Liquid Foundation
When to Toss: Every Six Months
Liquid foundations will turn as the water evaporates. There are also contamination risks, which you can minimize by applying foundation only with clean hands, brushes, or fresh sponges.
Skin Care
When to Toss: Every Six Months
Whenever possible, I purchase skin care in a bottle with a pump dispenser, because creams in jars can become contaminated each time they are opened/applied. If your favorite product comes in a jar only, be sure to apply with clean hands or a sterile pad.
Sunscreens usually have an expiration date, but once you open sunscreen and expose the product to light and air, it will start to degrade. Therefore, throw out your sunscreen six months after opening, even if the expiration date has not yet passed.
Lipstick
When to Toss: Every Two Years
When the texture of your favorite lipstick changes, it’s time to throw it away. Lipstick will last a couple of years if you are careful about replacing the cap or cover after application. Lipstick is another cosmetic that should not be shared with friends.
Powder Foundation, Eye Shadow and Blush
When to Toss: Every Two Years
The dry formulas of powder-based foundations, eye shadows and blushes make it difficult for bacteria to grow. Throw out these products every two years or when you notice a change in the texture.
Nail Polish
When to Toss: Every Two Years
There is almost no risk of your nail polish being contaminated by bacteria, but its texture will become gooey and dry over time, making it difficult to apply. Lengthen the life of your polish by storing it in a cool, dry place.
