What’s New (Under the Sun) to Save Your Skin?
June 21st, 2012 | Posted by in Healthy Living | Notes from Vitabath
Have you seen the recent headlines questioning the safety of some ingredients in sunscreens? Yet we’ve all been cajoled to spare our skin from the harmful rays of the sun. What’s a sun-worshiping, skin-saving diva to do?
We decided to track down some answers. The latest and greatest advice we find, from the American Academy of Dermatology in May 2012, is that the risks of unprotected sun exposure still outweigh the limited studies that raised all the fuss.
So for now, our nation’s top skin docs still advise to use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher as part of a strategy of covering up and avoiding the most intense sunshine. What is new in 2012 is that some regulations will be showing up on sunscreen labels to help you sort out the true broad-spectrum sunscreens from mere wannabes.
A shady strategy: Note that the docs aren’t giving you license to slather on a bottle and bake out on the beach all day. Far from it. Their advice includes to cover up, stay in the shade, and to protect your skin by generously applying the right sunscreen. Tanning beds? In your dreams.
A conspiracy of cover-ups: The good news: you’ve got an entire category of accessories — sun shielding — to have fun with. Doctor’s orders, go shopping.
• Hats – Try fedoras, floppy beach hats (crocheted, straw, denim or other prints), and sophisticated wide-brim hats. The once-stodgy visor is rumored to be coming back among teens. Tip: if you can see light through it, it’s not doing much to save your skin.
• Beach cover-ups. Have you ever heard of the Zen view, where seeing only a small slice of a magnificent scene makes it all the more alluring? We think the same applies to beach cover-ups, but we’d go with a bit more class than Ms. Jolie. Angie’s leg, move over.
These are just a couple of ideas to get you started, and we’re sure you can come up with more ways to stay sun-safe and be stylish. And anytime you’ve spent a day out in the harsh wind or sun, turn to the Vitabath Plus for Dry Skin Collection for a soothing solution.
